Here’s some good news for all the fans of the animated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy. Get ready to meet your favorite Hiccup and Toothless again. Universal Pictures will release a live-action adaptation of Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon on March 14, 2025.

Dean DeBlois, who wrote and directed the animated trilogy, has been tasked with writing, producing, and directing the live-action adaptation. It would mark DeBlois’ debut in live-action filmmaking.

How to Train Your Dragon (2010) was the first of three animated films, followed by How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). All three films received critical and commercial acclaim, and were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The trilogy grossed more than $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. The trilogy has also spawned several television series, streaming on Cartoon Network, Netflix, Peacock, and Hulu.

The How to Train Your Dragon series is based on British author Cressida Cowell’s children’s books of the same name. Set in the medieval world, the trilogy follows the story of shy and socially awkward Viking teenager Hiccup who befriends a dragon that is traditionally feared by his people. He names the dragon Toothless and tries to fight the anti-dragon prejudice of his own people.
